A 124-117 win in the Middle England League has sent Warwickshire joint second, after beating Cambridgeshire.

Despite having to contend with constant drizzle during the match, the ladies had more than enough to see off their opponents at Littleport Bowling Club.

The club finished with five winning rinks in all to give them 15 points from a possible 17, putting them in contention for the title with three games left to play.

Sue Hornsby (Lillington) with Donna Kerr (RLS), and Sharon Keal (Snitterfield) with Debbie Bloxham (Stratford) finished with the highest winning rink, taking a lead after the sixth end and going 15-6 up after the tenth.

Despite the deficit being narrowed to 17-12 at 16 ends, Warwickshire eventually ran out 28-13 winners.

The quartet of Pat Moore (Three Spires) with Antoinette Lambert (Ambleside), and Linda Linney (Stratford) with Jacqui Cook (Lillington) managed a 24-17 win in an evenly contested game.

After taking a 9-0 lead after the fifth end, the two sides exchanged scores, but their fast start allowed Warwickshire to keep their noses in front and edge out a victory.

Moira Parsons (Welford) with Velisa Brown (Southam), and Pippa Mace (Lillington) and Trish Jarvis (Wolvey) meanwhile won by seven shots at 19-12.

Chris Cooke with Rosemarie Geden (both Southam), and Di Medhurst (Stoke) with Liz Westell (Welford) claimed the final win of the day for Warwickshire, edging their Cambridgeshire rivals 26-24.

The two sides were evenly matched after nine ends with the visitors 8-7 in front, but were made to work for their victory until the very last.

Cambridgeshire came back to lead 21-24 after Warwickshire dropped five shots, but five shots on the last end ensured they went back in front to win the game.

Jenny Corn with Pat Gagg (both Lillington), and Joy Cooke (Blossomfield) with Elaine Taylor (Stoke) were on the wrong end of an 8-33 scoreline, after losing an early lead.

Warwickshire are next in action in the Middle England League in less than a week’s time, when they face Leicestershire on Wednesday at Hinckley Bowling Club.
