WARWICKSHIRE Bears head coach Tom Masterson has spoken of his delight after watching his depleted women’s side come away with a defeat and a victory at the third and final weekend of the BWB Women’s league
The Bears travelled to Nottingham Wildcats Arena at the weekend knowing they were still in the running to finish top of their league.
But they knew they were in for a difficult weekend as they faced two tough matches against Angels of the North and league leaders Bristol Bisons with only five available players.
First up was a re-match against Angels of the North (3) who were out for revenge after the Bears had beaten them in the previous encounter.
The game started as a close and tense affair with nothing between the two sides until the second quarter when the Bears started to get their game together.
Masterson’s side began pulling away from the Angels and a strong defence combined with some great offence allowed the Bears to run-out clear winners 31-23.
Up next for the Bears was a difficult match against London All-Stars this proved to be one game too many for Masterson’s side who lost out 54-13.
With only five available players, two of which were carrying injuries from the previous day’s game, the Bears struggled against the All-Stars whose hard pressing game and strong defence proved to strong for the Bears.
“The ladies have done fantastic this season, for their first time playing in the Women’s league,” said coach Masterson.
“Some of them have only been playing for a short amount of time, and they have all gone far and above any expectations I had set for them.
“With a few more players we will have a great side, so we need to actively go and find some new players to add to our team, plus keep improving over the summer and come back bigger and stronger and try and win it next year.”
