Warwick Hockey Club off to flyer in 2019

WARWICK Hockey Club mostly had reasons to be pleased after the weekend’s results saw victories for their men’s 2nd and 5th sides, whilst the women’s 2nd side were also victorious on Saturday.

Warwick’s men’s first team were the only side to lose as they opened their 2019 campaign away to Rugby, where they dominated the early proceedings inside Rugby’s half, but failed to capitalise on several penalty corners at which chances were spurned, albeit from a fine display from Rugby’s goal tender.

Oli Hobbs looked in fine form and almost found the net with a reverse stick strike that was somehow kept out, but his efforts proved fruitless as Rugby sucker punched the visitors with two penalty corner strikes, quickly added to by a left-wing counter that was swept home from close-range.

Finding themselves three goals down, it took a strongly worded team-talk at the interval for Warwick to buck up their ideas, going on to create further chances but to no avail. They did however claw something back from Pete Newton who put away a rebound, but when attempting to close the deficit further, they fell further behind – a ball in behind was put away to cap off the scoring. A harsh scoreline that doesn’t reflect the attacking threat that Warwick posed throughout.

The men’s 2nd’s had better fortune against Boots 2nd’s however, running out convincing 3-0 winners.

The Nottingham side had a large spell with the ball, but were forced into errors through the pressing game that Warwick began to employ, opening the scoring through Tom Booker’s deflected strike.

He would later double his tally when a cross was nudged into his path by Tom Selby, leaving Booker to fire low into the corner.

The visitors grew into the game but a third goal from Selby via a penalty corner would wrap up a vital win over Boots, a result which was earned from good tactical play to oust their opponents.

The women’s 2nd’s edged a narrow victory over Nuneaton thanks to a battling performance to get 2019 off to a flyer.

A Charlotte Silvester strike at the far post from a cross capped off her excellent run into space, a goal which urged Warwick to chase more strikes to add to the scoreboard, although Nuneaton’s stopper appeared in inspired form to deny Warwick a run-away victory.

Nuneaton turned the tables in the second-half and countlessly threatened Warwick’s Becky Morgan, but she remained resolute in goal, a solid defensive effort seeing out the win.

Lastly, a comfortable 3-0 victory for the men’s 5th side earned bragging rights over Stratford’s 6’s.

Mike Heelis, Albie Waterton and Kelvin Morris strikes earned the points but Joe Brennan’s man-of-the-match display made it a much more convincing result thanks to his clean sheet.
