Victory at sixth attempt for Spartans

Leamington Editorial 26th Nov, 2019   0

LEAMINGTON Spartans’ second team finally claimed their first win in Division Two of the Warwickshire Basketball League at the sixth attempt.

The maiden victory came at the expense of Nuneaton Predators’ second team, who remain winless following the 85-34 result.

Spartans were made to do it the hard way after ending the first quarter 17-16 down, overturning the scores with a dominant second quarter in which they conceded just four baskets to lead 34-21 overall.

It laid a foundation for Leamington to build on in the second half, edging further away from the visitors and winning the game comfortably thanks to valid contributions from Orioles Quitana-Morales, who scored 18 points, and Dragosh Serbans, provider of 13 points.

Leamington’s first team were unable to repeat the success on their travels in Division One, going down 76-49 to Tamworth Tigers.

The experienced hosts ground out an early 19-13 lead in the first quarter, one which they held onto despite 17 points being posted by the Spartans’ Murat Kaciran.

With 21 points separating the two sides heading into the final quarter, a strong end to the match by Tigers’ top scorer Lukasz Bolda – who recorded 18 points overall – sealed victory for the hosts.
