Spa remain second despite losing draw

Leamington Editorial 29th Jul, 2019   0

LEAMINGTON were forced to settle for a losing draw after a rain disrupted meeting at Barnards Green in Birmingham & District Premier Division Two.

In a match initially reduced to 30 overs, the hosts hit a 191-6 total, before Spa finished on 123-8 from their revised innings of 26 overs.

An opening stand of 80 between George Rhodes (45) and Ryan Tongue (32) got Barnards Green off to a strong start, though the departure of Tongue for the first wicket led to a brief downfall for the hosts.

Rhodes was trapped lbw by Matthew Davison (2-32), while Mahaaz Ahmed (4) and Joe Crichard (6) were both caught from Nabeel Asghar (4-53) deliveries as Green slipped to 91-4.

Josh Tongue was the next to be dismissed by Asghar, but not before putting on 36 with Phil Harris (58no) to revive the innings somewhat.

Ashlea Brewer (9) was the final wicket claimed by Ashgar following Craig Miles’ third catch of the game, prior to a stand of 52 to finish the innings.

In reply, Waqar Ahmed (4) and Harrison Smith (25) opened with a partnership of 24, as Leamington struggled to match the quickfire start made by the hosts.

Sulaiman Hussain (14) was then run out by Will Dovey at 48-2, while Smith was the first dismissal of the afternoon for Barnards Green bowler Jonathan Dovey (5-45) after a catch by Ryan Tongue.

Craig Miles (7) lasted a short stint at the crease, as did Chris Calcott (8), Jonathan Wigley (1), Oliver Currill (4) and Asghar (0) who followed.

Tailender Matthew Davison (22no) and William Mashinge (15no) were able to take Spa over the 100-run mark and to a more respectable score of 123-8, earning eight points for their side in the process.

The result means Spa remain in second, two points ahead of Harborne and six behind new leaders Ombersley, ahead of the visit of bottom side Brockhampton on Saturday (noon).
