GABINDER CHEEMA, a powerlifter based in Leamington, set a new West Midlands record at the West Midlands Powerlifting Championships.

Cheema lifted 152.5 kilograms to break his own West Midlands record which previously stood at 147.5 kg.

And that lift was enough to secure first place in the 100 kg equipped benchpress category at the Black Country Barbell gym in Stourbridge.

Coached by his dad Nirmal, Gabinder lifts for the British Drug Free Powerlifting Association and came fourth in the 2016 World Benchpress Unequipped Championship.

His training was hampered by sickness which forced him to miss two weeks of training ahead of the recent championships.

Gabinder weighed in at 96.7 kg and qualified for British single bench press lifts which take place in March this year.

He was supported by his family at the event including his parents, daughter Daya, son Arjun and wife Sandeep.
