Perfect weekend for Bears Women's Wheelchair Basketball Club

Leamington Editorial 5th Feb, 2019   0

A CLEAN sweep of wins marked a successful weekend for Warwickshire Bears Women’s Wheelchair Basketball Club in Round 2 of the BWB Women’s League.

The Bears kicked off their weekend with a narrow 27-22 victory over the Jaguars, a match which saw captain Aimee Lane make her return to the side.

A slow start by Warwickshire was eventually built upon as they found their rhythm, finding success through the youthful duo of Ellan Fraser and Fran Smith, who managed to net the points to earn victory.

Going into Sunday’s fixtures, a 9am tip-off started proceedings against the Scottish Warriors, a debutant in the league who posed somewhat of an unknown challenge to the Bears.

Their opposition would clearly prove inexperienced at this level though, as the Bears sought to tear apart the Warriors’ defence.

A low-pressing game by the Bears allowed them to stay compact in defence and make a number of interceptions, proving a tactical masterstroke as they found themselves on the attack on numerous occasions.

The final scoreline of 40-6 in Warwickshire’s favour was reflective of how dominant the Bears were in attack – a key momentum builder ahead of their final fixture of the weekend.

South West Wales Dragons proved a sterner test, but again the Bears were far too good for their opposition.

Although the Dragons opened the game with a six point lead, a time-out by the Bears coach saw them emerge much stronger in defence and gain a foothold in the match.

Jess Whyte and Smith were influential at both ends of the court, while the sharp shooting of Fraser built a solid lead for the Bears after overturning the scoreline.

Michelle Quested was precise with her finishing and added further points to the tally, helping to seal a third win from three for Warwickshire.

Coach Dan Smith was enthused by what he saw over the course of the weekend.

“[It was] a fantastic performance from the girls. A minimal team including three new players brought together with returning players from injuries came together all gave 100% and won three games out of four.

“[I’m] really proud of each of them. We are already looking forward to the next round in April.”

Warwickshire Bears are next in action when Bears second string travel to Aylesbury to take on the Aces on Sunday.
