Old Leamingtonians fall to comeback defeat at Ledbury

Leamington Editorial 7th Oct, 2019   0

A DEPLETED Old Leamingtonians fell to their first defeat in Midlands 3 West (South) at the hands of Ledbury.

The 29-17 loss at Ross Road began with the visitors falling behind less than five minutes into proceedings, when a wonderful passing move caught out the Leamingtonians defence, resulting in a converted try.

A positive response led to centre Liam Wellings bundled his way over the try line, though the missed conversion meant Ledbury retained their lead, one which was extended by a penalty by Jamie Rayfield.

To add to OL’s woes, Ciaran O’Connor and Joe Talamini both had to depart the field with head injuries before the half was out, with the only positive being the downward slope that favoured the visitors in the second half.

Initially, this factor looked to be working in Old Leams favour when Henry Reynolds and Tom Smith added tries to put their side 17-10 in front.

But the hosts had not read the script, and instead levelled the scores with a converted try, before scoring in the corner moments after OL had missed a penalty.

A final attack by the hosts resulted in the final try of the game to the right of the posts, which was converted to finish off the scoring.

Old Leamingtonians seek a response against Manor Park a week on Saturday (3pm).
