Mixed bag for Khalsa

HOCKEY: KHALSA have experienced mixed fortunes since their new Premier Division campaign started, losing their opening game but bouncing back to win at the weekend.

Following a 4-3 loss to Harbourne, Khalsa travelled to Rugby and East Warwickshire for their latest contest.

Khalsa welcomed back Sean Robinson into defence – and his influence shone from the outset as Khalsa started the brighter of the two teams and dominated possession.

This dominance lead to an early short corner, which was comfortably converted by Alex Idoine.

Despite Khalsa’s continued dominance in the game, Rugby responded with a goal against the run of play from their first short corner to equalise.

Idoine added his second strike of the day – again from a short corner – to hand Khalsa the lead once more.

Despite some late pressure from Rugby, the game remained at 2-1, leaving the two teams level on points in the Midlands Premier League.

Khalsa play a home fixture at St Nicholas Park on Saturday against Belper, who will be looking to extend their winning run to three games.

2nd XI

KHALSA’S second team entertained Rugby 2s on the opening day of the new season.

Khalsa started brightly and kept the Rugby attack at bay. They soon took the lead from a short corner when Josh Pennington converted from close range.

A lapse in concentration from the defence put pay to any hopes of Khalsa building to two-goal lead though as Rugby quickly equalised.

The goal injected some life into Rugby’s game, and they were soon two-goals ahead before the half-time whistle was blown.

A fourth goal appeared to put the result beyond doubt, though Elliot was on hand to score Khalsa’s second marker.

A further counter attack and a great solo goal from Rugby won them the game though, making the final score 2-5 as Khalsa 2s started the season in losing fashion.
