EVERY golfer has a hard luck story and Leamington & County member Tony Cairns is no exception.
Several years ago he was leading the Warwick Cup with a net 65 only for the competition to be cancelled following a thunder, lightning and rain storm that made the golf course unplayable.
And more recently in the Griffin Bowl tournament he returned a 64 which was swept aside when a fellow competitor shot a 63.
However, in the recently held Gaydon Trophy, Cairns finally got his name engraved on a cup at last.
Recording a birdie on the 18th hole, 12 handicapper Cairns secured a fine net 67 and just edged out Mark Rowland (77-10-67) on a count back, for the sun to shine on him at last.
Craig Dealtry took the Lockheed Trophy for the best gross with a score of 74 and Garry Wright (77-9-68), Colin Green (88-18-70) and Pat Callaghan (79-8-71) were also among the prizes on a difficult day. The standard scratch worked out as 74.
TOM HIGGITT produced a sparkling performance to win the June Medal at Kenilworth Golf Club on Saturday.
The talented two-handicapper carded no fewer than five birdies on his way to a splendid three under par 68, nett 66, which secured success in Division A and also took the best gross prize.
Richard Lane 77, nett 68, finished runner-up from Jim Davies 79, nett 69, Paul Brewster 75, nett 70, Marcus Burrell 80, nett 70, Mick Rossborough 76, nett 70, Mick Coop 79, nett 70, and David Wright 79, nett 70.
Countback was required to determine the outcome in Division B with Nick Coleman 82, nett 70, just edging out Sam O’Sullivan 81, nett 70, and David Sercombe 81, nett 70, by virtue of a better back nine.
Mick Dorgan 83, nett 71, was fourth ahead of Denis Blasdale 83, nett 72, and Jamie Eccleston 85, nett 72.
The Division C winner was Dick Williams 86, nett 69, from Michael Beckett 93, nett 70, Graham Hurst 87, nett 70, and Vince Healey 87, nett 71.
