LEAMINGTON cut the gap on Southern League Premier Division leaders Slough Town to just two points after beating Redditch United 2-0 on Tuesday evening.
A brace from striker Ryan Rowe proved to be the difference between the two sides as Paul Holleran’s side recorded a fifth away win of the season.
Holleran made just one change to the side that beat King’s Lynn 3-0 last Tuesday with Jack Edwards coming back into the side for Joe Magunda in midfield.
The visitors started strongly with Richard Taundry seeing his free kick well saved on three minutes and on 14 minutes the Ahmed Obeng skipped past two defenders before his shot was deflected wide.
Edwards shot over the bar from 20 yards out and Rob Thompson-Brown played in Obeng but the Redditch goalkeeper was quick off his line to make a smart stop.
The breakthrough finally came shortly after the half-hour mark when a poor pass back and a sloppy clearance was jumped upon by Rowe who happily poked the ball home into an empty net for the opener.
It could have been 2-0 just moments before the break when the Redditch goalkeeper made a superb triple save, firstly to deny Jamie Hood’s downward header and then to keep out Edwards and Obeng.
Leamington doubled their lead three minutes before the hour mark when Edwards did superbly well to skip past two defenders inside the box before setting up Rowe for another simple tap in.
Redditch had a great chance to get back into the match when they were awarded a penalty after Luke Shearer was bought down inside the area but Daneco Johnson’s penalty was well saved by Tony Breeden.
There was one final chance for winger Courtney Baker-Richardson who was played down the left and unleashed a shot at goal but his effort was saved and it remained 2-0 at the final whistle.
