KARTING: YOUNGSTER Jake Rubio made history this week after winning all nine races to be crowned winner of the Mr Karting Grand Prix Junior Championship for the second year running.
Leamington lad Rubio won Tuesday’s final round of the season to become the first driver to win all nine rounds in over 15 years.
In doing so he was also named Driver of the Year and his prize is a trip to the home of British motorsport, Silverstone, where he will take part in the iZone Motorsport Driver training programme using their state-of-the-art facilities.
Thirteen-year-old Jake has been racing for five years and his passion for the sport started at Mr Karting in Harbury Lane where he still holds the title as the fastest cadet driver.
Jake made the move to outdoor racing in 2013 and after getting his MSA licence, with the help of his parents he bought his own kart.
He initially raced in the Honda Cadet Championship with speeds in access of 60mph before taking part in his first professional outdoor season in 2014.
With the help of his trusted mechanic (dad), Jake finished fourth in his debut season despite racing alongside drivers with far more experience in outdoor racing.
The following year he finished seventh despite missing three months due to a broken elbow before moving up into the Junior X30 Championships where he races under the number 58 in his gold kart which hits speeds of 100mph.
Jake clinched third place at this year’s Rissington Junior X30 Championship and is currently sitting in sixth place which one more race to go in Shenington later this month.
