"I don't go in there for anything less" Quartermaine previews second pro fight - plus more success at Cleary's

LEAMINGTON’S Danny Quartermaine says he is looking forward to announcing himself to a national audience in his second professional fight in just over two week’s time.

The 22-year-old, who beat Ibrar Riyaz in his first fight since stepping up from the amateur ranks last month, is back in action on Saturday March 28 on a card televised by Channel Five at Coventry’s Skydome Arena.

Though an opponent is yet to be announced, Quartermaine says he is hoping to demonstrate the qualities that earned him plenty of plaudits during his lengthy amateur career.

“Hopefully by fighting on shows like this it will really show what I’m about and who I am, that I can sell a lot of tickets and that I’m an entertaining fighter,” he said.

“In the amateurs, I was known for having an engine and being aggressive, but in the professional game I’m going to show parts of that but also that I can actually box and give people a nice fight to watch as well.”

As far as a prediction for his fight goes, the Cubbington native – who trains at Cleary’s Boxing Gym – is confident of a second victory on his record, adding: “I’m going for the win, I don’t go in there for anything less.

“A stoppage would be nice but I’m not going to start saying I’m going to knock someone out or that I’m going to finish it early, we’ll just see how it goes on the night, get the win and move onto the next one.”

Elsewhere, the latest prodigy from Cleary’s – Reni Bulyak – made a winning debut in the ring on Saturday night.

The 13-year-old fighter, who hails from Southam, was rewarded for his brave decision to take on previously unbeaten Bradford fighter Saary Ahmed Deen after winning by unanimous decision at Walsall Wood ABC.

Despite the difference in weight, height and experience, Bulyak found himself naturally at ease in the ring and put his opponent immediately under pressure with an offensive approach.

Deen was left visibly shocked by the aggressive style of the Cleary’s boxer, and simply had no answer to Bulyak – something which was reflected in the judges’ scoring.

Head coach and gym owner Edwin Cleary prophesied that there is plenty more to come from the youngster, and said: “Even though he’s only been boxing for a short period of time he’s taken to the sport like a duck to water.

“He really is a talent, and I can only see a very bright future for this young man.”
