Gary Havelock - Coventry Bees are the team to beat

GARY Havelock is in no doubt his Bees’ team are becoming a force in the Elite League after extending their lead at the top of the table to ten points, writes Observer speedway report Robin Allen.

Having failed to pick up league points in just two of their 11 meetings so far this season, Bees have developed a determination to ground out results from tricky situations.

None could be truer than at the Jordan Road Surfacing Stadium on Saturday night where Havelock’s side recorded a narrow 48-42 win over rivals Leicester after bouncing back from a disastrous start in terrific style.

And after watching his side’s fifth win on the road this season, Havelock heaped praise on the team effort and the role his in-form captain Chris Harris played.

“Chris (Harris) again seems to be getting a lot of bonus points lately,” said Havelock. “The fans don’t understand that he’s probably the best team rider in our team.

“He always looks for his team-mate in the first bend and tries to get them through; he’s a fantastic skipper he really is.

“We had our usual chat before the meeting and it started off in the worst possible way with a 5-1 against us.

“It just showed the character in the boys as we hit back with a 4-2 and then a couple of races later we got another 4-2 and then a 5-1.

“Once we were in front I always thought we could control the meeting, keeping the last places off the card and I thought the boys did that well.

“It just proved when we all fire it doesn’t matter where we are; at home or away I feel that we can win the meetings again if we ‘touch wood’ can go injury free which until the end of the season then we’ll go very close that is for sure.”

The team’s impressive away form has seen their loyal supporters turn out in force this season.

They were there once again in large numbers packing out the terraces at Leicester and Havelock was quick to thank them for another strong backing.

He added: “It was great to see so many Coventry fans there.

“I know it’s not a million miles away but still they’ve got to drive there and pay their hard earned money to get in but again fantastic support the boys really appreciate it.

“If they keep turning out I’m sure the boys are going to keep putting the performances in on the track.

“With the history of Coventry against Leicester obviously with Leicester not having a track for more than 20 years both sets of fans miss that rivalry but now Leicester are back and in the Elite League at least we get to race at least four times a season.”
