FOOTBALL - Racing Club Warwick end winless run in five-goal thriller against Haughmond

RACING CLUB WARWICK ended their four-game winless run with a 3-2 win against lowly Haughmond thanks to two goals from Romario Martin.

Martin turned the game on its head with his first goals for the Racers since returning to the club from Redditch United with Costelus Lautaru adding a third late one.

The result means Racing sit 15th in the Midland Football League Premier table, eight points clear of the relegation places.

However, Warwick made a disastrous start when Harvey Lewis pounced on a poor backwards header from Dan Kavanagh to poke the ball past onrushing Racers goalkeeper Dan Crane.

The home side responded when Martin struck the post from 30-yards out before Crane made a superb save to keep out Lewis and prevent the visitors from doubling their lead.

Martin came close again soon after when he almost bundled the ball home in off the post before he eventually slotted home with a cool finish from Joshua Steele’s cross.

Warwick keeper Crane was forced off on the hour mark with a dislocated finger and was replaced in goal by midfielder Charlie Jones.

And this appeared to galvanise the home side after Martin fired wide before Lautaru shot over on two occasions.

Martin then doubled his tally to hand Racing the lead when he shrugged off a challenge before driving forward and finding the bottom corner with three defenders closing him down.

And the Racers secured the points when Lautaru scored from close range after being picked out by Chris Mayuba’s cross much to the relief of the home supporters inside Townsend Meadow.

Haughmond’s Josh Thomas eventually beat captain Jones in the Warwick goal with the final kick of the game but it was too little too late as the Racers took the spoils.

Racing are next in action away at Shifnal Town on Saturday, February 12 with kick-off at 3pm at the Acoustafoam Stadium.
