FOOTBALL - Leamington secure point away at Boston

DAN TURNER’s first-half goal secured a point for Leamington FC as they were held to a 1-1 draw away at Boston United.

Turner netted his 14th goal of the campaign on 19 minutes only for Luke Shiels to equalise for the home side early in the second period at the Jakemans Stadium.

The result means Leamington now sit 14th in the National League North table, seven points outside of the play-off places.

Paul Holleran’s side weathered an early storm before Turner broke into the penalty area at the other end and stung the palms of Boston goalkeeper Marcus Dewhurst.

And after Kelsey Mooney could only find the side netting, Turner opened the scoring when he controlled the ball on his chest before drilling a low shot beyond Dewhurst.

Both teams struggled to create clear-cut openings with Turner wasteful on the counter attack when he overcooked a forward pass after being played in by Dan Meredith.

Brakes keeper Callum Hawkins was then called into action late on in the half when he got down low to save Scott Duxbury’s shot.

The visitors came close to doubling their lead when Devon Kelly-Evans’ whipped corner was pushed away by Dewhurst from underneath his own crossbar.

However, Boston drew level on 51 minutes when captain Shiels powered home a header from a corner from the right.

The Brakes were then indebted to Hawkins for keeping the scores level when he saved from Danny Elliott before bravely preventing Scott Pollock from firing in the loose ball.

Chances came and went for Leamington with Steph Morley’s free-kick forcing Dewhurst into an unorthodox save before Kelly-Evans volleyed well over the crossbar as the two teams settled for a point.

Leamington are next in action at home to Burton Albion tomorrow night (Tuesday, March 8) in the semi-finals of the Birmingham Senior Cup with kick-off at 7.45pm at the Your Co-Op Community Stadium.
