Dan Greenwood and Conor Dwyer back with Storm in 2016

COVENTRY Storm has confirmed this week that number one Dan Greenwood and former mascot Conor Dwyer will be back to race for the club in the National League next season.

Greenwood returns for his third campaign with Storm and will start as their highest-averaged rider on a figure of 8.29.

The 22-year-old impressed in 2015 after making the step up to out-and-out leader at National League level.

He scored 15-point maximums in away wins at both Buxton and Rye House and continued to be a regular race-winner and high-scorer until his season was effectively ended by a heavy crash in the home meeting against  Mildenhall in August which saw him suffer serious concussion.

Having aborted a comeback attempt in the Premier League in order to get fully fit for 2016, Greenwood is set to lead a strong heat-leader trio for the Storm along with Liam Carr and Martin Knuckey.

“Dan’s a big rider for the Storm,” said promoter Mick Horton. “A lot of expectations are with him and he expects to do well himself.

“He’s a quality rider at this level with real ambitions to progress his career further in the Premier League, and we’re very pleased to have him back.

“Dan will be heading up a top three which I feel is going to be as good as anyone else’s in the National League, and hopefully we’ll be able to secure some silverware.

“We’re going to have a much more consistent fixture list for the Storm next season on Friday nights which is good news for everyone, and it’s all about making the top four and giving our assets the opportunity to progress.”

Dwyer also joins Greenwood after being named the Most Improved Rider for the Storm in 2015 in his first full season in the third tier of the sport.

He pushed his average up from 3.00 to 5.44 with a series of impressive scores, which will lead to him taking on a role in the main body of the team next year at second-string.

“Nobody likes having to wait around until February so to have it done before Christmas means it isn’t going to be a worrying time thinking I might get left out,” said Dwyer.

“If I’d upped my average by a point this year I’d have taken that, but once you start winning races in the National League you start believing in yourself.

“I never expected to be on a maximum in the last meeting, that was a bit surreal, but it was a good feeling and hopefully I’ll get that chance again.

“I think next year might be a bit tougher because I’ll be in the top five from the start, but hopefully I can improve some more and also it will be good experience to go to the new venues, Belle Vue and the Isle of Wight.”
