LEAMINGTON Cycling and Athletics Club will begin their midweek season with a time trial event next week (Wednesday, April 6).
The traditional five-mile ride takes place on the Gaydon course and begins at 6.45pm.
In addition to a rear light, a helmet and front light are compulsory in all time trial events.
Phil Adkins holds the club’s men’s record over the distance with a time of 10 minutes 35 seconds which was set back in 1983.
And Natasha Morrison is the current holder of the women’s record with a time of 12 minutes 4 seconds set in 2011.
Events will run each and every Wednesday from April to September starting with next week’s ‘Prologue’ in Gaydon before finishing with a ‘King of the Mountains’ up Edge Hill.
Riders will battle out for the overall title in a multi-distance, season-long, 26-race campaign or can simply try to claim bragging rights over their friends and improve their times.
As well as the overall league competition, the club also awards the Vaughan Trophy to the rider who shows the biggest gain in time from previous personal bests as a reward for competitors who improve year on year in training.
Midway through the season, the club hosts an annual ‘Duathlon’ with athletes, an 11-mile time trial followed by a 6km run, the Ted and Doris Trophy (a giant carriage clock donated in the 50’s by long-term club stalwarts).
Community spirit is very close to the heart of the club and is represented each week at these events by two committed ladies who bake cakes and serve hot drinks, all the money is donated to Myton Hospice and regularly raises over £500 to £600 during the season.
