Cubs made to lick wounds after opening defeats

WARWICKSHIRE Bears Cubs head coach Adrian Taber says he is excited to see the growth of his young team despite twice falling to defeat on Sunday.

The Cubs were ousted 32-31 by Swansea Fletchlings and 79-31 in a more one-sided defeat to reigning champions CWBA Juniors in Pool C of the Lord Tarverners Junior League.

Commenting on the performances of his side, Taber said: “Although the results didn’t go our way today, we have a very young group of players who have come on so much in the last 12 months.

“I am proud of them all and look forward to seeing the team develop to their full potential.”

In the opener against Swansea, the Cubs were narrowly edged by a single point in an encounter that remained in the balance right to the very end.

With seconds remaining, Warwickshire had a shot swirl around the rim of the basket and come out, handing the Fletchlings the win in cruel fashion.

Bears had no time to rest and then went toe-to-toe with their hosts from Coventry, with the quality of the opposition becoming increasingly clear as the match progressed.

The experience and strength in depth in the CWBA ranks certainly played a part, helping them take a comprehensive victory.

Warwickshire return to action in the tournament on February 1 next year in another double header against their Pool C opponents.
