Bears reaping benefits by reaching out to community

Coventry Bears are already beginning to see widespread interest in their development programme across the county.

COVENTRY Bears’ CEO Debbie Watson says the club’s grounding in the local community will only increase over time – following the establishment of three satellite teams.

With a grant of £15,000 awarded to the Bears in the Community, the creation of the Alphas, Griffins and Knights intends to increase the number of local players regularly engaged in rugby league and bring new faces into the sport.

And having instigated a rapid sign-up of 250 players and coaches and the involvement of 12 schools in the development programme, hopes are high for the future of the game in the Coventry and Warwickshire area – not least for Watson.

“We feel really lucky to be able to get back up and running and kickstart the great things we have been planning throughout lockdown – both the professional team and our community work,” she said.

“We will continue to build relationships with local schools to give the youth in the city the opportunity to try a new sport this summer and for many years to come.

“Our community work is bigger and better than ever before, and we are delighted to be back out in the sunshine and operating at full capacity once again, having an offer for anyone who wants to get involved in either playing, volunteering, or watching sport.”
