ATHLETICS - Spa Striders athlete Ian Allen wins Warwick Half Marathon

SPA Striders athlete Ian Allen won this year’s Warwick Half Marathon in a course record time whilst also setting a new club record and achieving a personal best (PB).

Allen ran to victory in a time of 1 hour 7 minutes 19 seconds (1:07:19) more than three minutes ahead of second place with 62 Spa Striders athletes taking part in the race.

Next across the line for Spa was Chris McKeown (1:15:35) in seventh followed by Chris Wilson (1:21:51 PB), Marco Frondella (1:21:56 PB), Keith Wilson (1:22:52), Joe Wilkes (1:24:33), Jack Gammon (1:27:48) and Joseph McCullagh (1:28:22 PB).

And Kat Robinson led the ladies’ home as fourth female overall and second senior female in 1 hour 28 minutes 31 seconds (1:28:31) whilst Kelsey Wiberley (1:30:29) was sixth lady and third senior female followed by Jason Hemming (1:30:53 PB) and Luke Bennett (1:30:59).




Laura Peake (1:31:44), Claire Davidson (1:31:50) and Clare Hinton (1:32:45) secured fourth, fifth and sixth in the FV40 category, with Matt Leydon (1:31:54 PB) sneaking in between them.

The remaining runners were Andy Collins (1:32:33 PB), Pete Teevan (1:36:01), Gethyn Friswell (1:36:38), Mark Whitehouse (1:36:53), Shaun Martin (1:36:59 PB), Darren Tosh (1:37:10 PB), Ben Cohen (1:37:17), Richard Humphrey (1:38:00), Iain Roebuck (1:38:34), Rob Mantell (1:39:03), Charlotte Everard (1:39:17), Andrew Stone (1:39:13), James Hartwright (1:39:37).

Kathryn Hemingway (2:13:57 Debut) and Patrick Crummy (2;13:57), Mary Whittaker (2:16:08), Tim Robb (2:18:09), Emma Teevan (2:18:09), Kathleen McCann (2:25:38), Anne-Claire Bennion (2:26:44) and Kathryn Miller (2:29:47).

Elsewhere, three Striders took part in the Cambridge Half Marathon with both Neil Smith (1.11.32) and John-Paul Hunt (1.21.05) running PB times whilst Ruth Tennant was on top form, finishing in the top six per cent of her age group with a time of 1.46.36.

And Jo Fleming took part in the mid-week ‘Big Bear Birches Challenge’ on Cannock Chase with each lap having over 1000ft of elevation on loose gravel paths.

Competitors can run as many 3.3 mile laps as they like in the allotted time with Fleming running seven laps or 23 miles in 3 hours 35 minutes.

Lastly, James Wiggins also enjoyed the hills this weekend in the Ashbourne 10K Seesaw run.

This award winning out-and-back route takes place along the Tissington Trail and despite no official results being released online Wiggins appears to have run a PB in 35 mins 58 secs.
