A UNIVERSITY chemistry student who was said to be using his contacts to help a large-scale dealer expand his customer base was caught with £18,000 worth of illegal drugs.
And Calvin Chan pleaded guilty at Warwick Crown Court to five charges of possessing various class A and class B drugs with intent to supply them.
Chan (24) of Russell Terrace, Leamington, also admitted illegally importing 200 grams of cannabis and possessing two other drugs for personal use.
Nick Devine, defending, pointed out that Chan had entered his plea to possessing a quantity of cocaine with intent to supply it on the basis that he was selling it for another man, who he had named.
“That man was a large-scale drug supplier who wanted to expand his customer base using the defendant’s contacts, and he didn’t feel he could refuse to enter into this arrangement,” he said.
Chan, a chemistry student, also supplied other drugs, including amphetamine, herbal cannabis, cannabis resin and the hallucinogenic drug DMT, to friends and acquaintances of friends on a commercial basis.
The Warwick University third year student also had small quantities of the class A psychedelic drug N-bome and class B UR144, a synthetic cannabinoid, for his own use.
He pleaded not guilty to two further charges of possessing the stimulant alpha-PVP and the psychedelic drug MeO-DALT with intent to supply them.
Mr Devine explained that Chan said he was not aware of those drugs being at his home, and that they were not his.
Prosecutor Simon Warlock pointed out that the offences Chan had admitted involved drugs worth a total of around £18,000 – and about £4,500 in cash was also seized from him.
At the request of Mr Devine, Judge Richard Griffith-Jones agreed to adjourn the case for a pre-sentence report to be prepared on Chan.
The judge rejected an application for Chan’s bail, which included a condition of reporting to Leamington police station once a week, to continue – and remanded him in custody.
