Warwick Town Bonfire cancelled due to pandemic

Leamington Editorial 17th Sep, 2020   0

THE ANNUAL Warwick Town bonfire has been cancelled due to the pandemic.

Organisers Warwick Lions and Warwick Rotary clubs say they feel it would be irresponsible to encourage crowds to gather on the racecourse and social distancing would be ‘impossible’ to enforce.

Committee secretary Jackie Crampton said: “Hoping against hope that the outbreak was receding, the new restrictions brought in made it clear it would have been irresponsible to encourage crowds to converge on the racecourse at this time.

“Public safety has to be our priority.”

The bonfire raises thousands of pounds for the clubs who have been organising the event for some 30 years.

Proceeds are given to local charities, but now both Carols at the Castle and the bonfire have been called off, the clubs are looking for other ways to continue to support good causes.

Jackie added: “Lions and Rotary continue to meet regularly on Zoom with speakers and local projects and welcome new members. If you are interested in helping your local community or learning more, contact them either on Facebook or via the websites.”
