A £2MILLION revamp of Leamington train station has been completed just in time to welcome a surge of visitors for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

The huge improvement scheme to the forecourt and underpass was scheduled to be completed in time for the start of the Games on Friday (July 29), when thousands more visitors are anticipated to visit the town to snatch a slice of the action – in particular the lawn bowls and para lawn bowls taking place at Victoria Park.

The extensive list of improvements to the station include renewing and refurbishing the station entrance, enlarging and upgrading the public spaces, providing new seating areas and better links within the station forecourt area for pedestrians and cyclists.

Resurfacing the station forecourt car park, improving bus connectivity with dedicated bus bays, new, improved wayfinding signage, enhanced lighting, new CCTV and the installation of new artwork in the pedestrian underpass were also included in the work.

Further enhancements are also planned to support and encourage sustainable travel. Work is currently progressing to create a secure cycle hub facility near the station’s main entrance, which will be completed in 2023.

Coun Wallace Redford, Warwickshire County Council’s (WCC) spokesperson for transport and planning, said: “We are very excited to see the positive changes that are taking place across Warwick district ahead of this summer’s Commonwealth Games. Work on Leamington station will certainly help to give an excellent first impression to visitors from across the Commonwealth and ensure that Warwickshire remains firmly on the map for both domestic and international visitors”.

Andrew Day, Leader of Warwick District Council (WDC), said: “The investment into our fantastic station will create an integrated transport hub enabling easy access to public transport and other modes of sustainable travel. Leaving a great legacy from the Commonwealth Games, which we will build on in future regeneration plans for Leamington”.

While Denise Wetton, Network Rail’s Central route director, added: “As well as providing better access to the station, these improvements will help to give a warm welcome to visitors to Leamington during the Commonwealth Games. They give a fantastic first impression of the town that the railway and residents can be proud of for years to come”.

Works were funded and delivered by the government’s Local Growth Fund through Coventry and Warwickshire Local Enterprise Partnership, WDC, WCC, Network Rail and Chiltern Railways.
