THE ONE WAY system in the centre of Wellesbourne is an accident waiting to happen fear villagers.

Concerns have been raised with Wellesbourne and Walton Parish Council (WWPC) over the number of drivers going the wrong way round the gyratory in the centre of the village.

And now councillors want to see improved signage in a bid to stop drivers making wrong turns.

Residents living on Church Street have been keeping watch on traffic travelling around the mini ring road with one householder counting 13 vehicles in four weeks driving in the wrong direction.

The signs around Church Street and Warwick Road where the one-way system runs are small and some are no longer facing in the right direction.

WWPC chairman Anne Prior said: “The need for improved signage around the gyratory is necessary.

“The county council have made improvements by painting signs on the road to help stop drivers from travelling the wrong way, but more needs to be done as these incidents keep occurring.

“As part of gathering evidence for the county council we have asked residents who live on the one-way road to keep an eye out for these incidents and they continue to make a note of them so we can illustrate the problem.”

A Warwickshire County Council spokesperson told the Observer a traffic safety engineer would be carrying out an investigation.
