Oldest Dogs Trust volunteer keeps tails wagging at 90

WALKING the pups at Dogs Trust highlights the week of the charity’s oldest volunteer – who has just turned 90.

Ron Brisby from Leek Wootton started volunteering for the Kenilworth-based centre 30 years ago when he retired.

Since then he has walked some 4,500 dogs around 3,000 miles, and seen 30,000 dogs come through the doors of the rehoming centre.

The volunteer signed up to offer his time as a way to keep fit and do something worthwhile with his spare time. He helps out by walking the dogs and giving them lots of love and affection while they wait to find new homes.

And Ron says he still loves spending time with his four-legged friends.

He said: “I have loved every minute of my time at Dogs Trust. I enjoy meeting the variety of dogs at the centre and seeing how happy they are when I come to take them out for walks. It’s incredibly rewarding to see the dogs going off to new homes, especially if they have been at waiting a while.

“I would really recommend volunteering to anyone thinking about it. It has kept me active and gets me out and about meeting new people. I can’t own dogs myself so it brings me so much joy to spend time with the dogs and see the difference I can make to their lives. I really look forward to my time spent at the centre – it’s safe to say it is a highlight of my week.”

And now staff at the centre want to thank Ron for all the work he does to keep tails wagging.

Volunteer co-ordinator Marie Charley said: “Ron is a wonderful volunteer who has given us so much of his time over the last three decades. He is such a friendly face and the dogs love his calm nature. We are so grateful to him for all of his dedication. He truly is one in a million.”
