'Lovely' Kenilworth Tesco worker becomes internet hit

Leamington Editorial 2nd Jul, 2014 Updated: 28th Oct, 2016   0

A SHOP assistant has become an overnight internet sensation thanks to a Facebook campaign naming her as the ‘loveliest lady in Kenilworth’.

June Clifford had her picture uploaded to the Kenilworth Spotted page by shopper Alex Harvey. so impressed was he by the customer service he received at the Tesco Express store.

The picture of 63-year-old June – who has worked at the Leyes Lane store for 15 years – received more than 1,000 Facebook ‘likes’ within 24 hours.

Regular customer Alex told the Observer: “I posted the picture because I wanted June to get the recognition she deserves. She is always so happy to see you and makes you feel happy after you meet her.

“If every shop assistant was as enthusiastic and positive as June I think we would see a decline in internet shopping!”

But mum-of-two June was not as interested in hearing about her growing notoriety – as when her friend called to fill her in she was watching her favourite show One Born Every Minute.

She said: “My friend called me at 9pm and said I was on Facebook. I said it couldn’t be me and asked her to call back after the programme had finished.

“When she called me again she said I had around 300 likes in a couple of hours.

“I was quite frightened then because I didn’t know a lot about Facebook but everything I have seen has been so wonderful and nice.”

June is always prepared to go the extra mile to help her customers.

She said: “My customers are everything to me and they are my friends too.

“A lot of them are a bit older and they are very special to me. I always ask them if they can make it to the car or if they need someone to help them back home.”

But there is one thing the shop assistant refuses to do for Kenilworth – join Facebook.

“I am just not interested in joining. I wouldn’t have a clue what to do. It’s just not for me.”
