A FOODBANK project with a difference is offering users fresh food items in Leamington.
And following a successful pilot, organisers from the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, are running the fresh foodbanks during the upcoming Easter holidays.
The inaugural event was held at the Baitul Ehsan Mosque in Adelaide Road. The food parcels – put together by volunteers – included bread, dairy and eggs donated by community members.
Co-organiser Tahar Ahmed told the Observer: “With the challenging macro climate currently and record inflation affecting basic goods, we wanted to gauge the demand for perishable goods from our network across the community in Leamington.
“Having reached out directly to contacts and through social media, there was a good response and level of interest meaning we were keen to go ahead with the pilot as planned.”
During the first event the team prepared and distributed 50 food packs containing four pints of milk, a loaf of bread, a dozen eggs, butter, cheese and a cooking guide leaflet.
The second event is taking place on April 10th and April 17th at the Ahmadiyya Muslim Centre.
Tahar added: “We will be primarily targeting holiday periods as this is when families seem to struggle the most, especially those with kids out of school during this time.
“From the feedback we have had, it has been a lifeline to some of the half term period, meaning they have a small buffer to cover other bills and make ends meet with rising prices all round.”
