TOWN’s across the district are being decked out in colourful banners and flags ready to welcome the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

The streets of Leamington, Warwick, Kenilworth and Whitnash are all getting their glad rags on for the start of the sporting extravaganza being held locally and beginning at the end of July.

And at the same time, teams from Warwick District Council are busily preparing for the handover of sections of Victoria Park to the Birmingham 2022 organisers on June 27, as it becomes the official venue for the Lawn Bowls and Para Lawn Bowls competitions.

Coun Liam Bartlett, Warwick District Council’s spokesperson for culture and tourism, said: “It’s so exciting to see the final touches being put in place as we prepare to welcome thousands of athletes and spectators to the biggest and largest profile event our district has ever seen.

“We do however want to ensure that local people can continue to enjoy our parks and public spaces throughout this period, which is why large parts of Victoria Park will remain open including the fabulous new play area and paddling pool.”

Although the Victoria Park Tennis Courts will be out of action from the end of June, VP Tennis will be relocating some of their activities to Kingsley School and Warwick School. The tennis facilities at nearby Christchurch Gardens are also available, with a new pre-booking system in place.

Street dressing work will taking place overnight to minimise disruption to businesses and residents. While further decorations including bunting and billboards will be installed during the run up to the Games which start on Thursday 28 July.
