Leamington church clock set to tick again soon

Leamington Editorial 14th Feb, 2017   0

THE CLOCK at Leamington’s All Saints Church will soon be ticking again.

The tower clock has been out of action for the past couple of years after the pendulum mechanism broke.

But following generous donations from Leamington Town Council, MP Chris White’s Love Leamington fund, and from around 50 individuals, some £8,000 has been pledged to carry out a full repair and make the clock electric.

The Victorian mechanism has been dismantled and taken to Cumbria for a full repair. The specialist restorers are now making the winding units and the mechanism should be back and working within a month.

Near neighbour Marianne Pitts, who is a member of the Friends of All Saints’ Church, told The Observer: “It will be really good to see the clock working again.

“Making it electric will also mean someone will not have to walk up the rickety steps to the tower each week to wind it up.

“It is an important building in Leamington and it should have a working clock.”

The clock – which has three faces – was made in London and was originally installed in 1884.

* THE SILVER screen returns to All Saints Church this year.

A screening last year of Monty Python’s religiously controversial Life of Brian made national headlines.

The screenings, to raise money to help with the maintenance of the church, will start next month with Batman (March 25).

It will be followed by 22nd April – Casablanca (April 22); The Godfather Part 1 (May 20); Life of Brian (June 24); Citizen Kane (July 22); Vertigo (August 26); Bladerunner (September 23); Grease (October 21); Taxi Driver (November 25); Star Wars (December 2); and It’s a Wonderful Life (Decemeber 16).

Tickets are £10 plus booking fee. Visit www.facebook.com/parishchurchfriends/ for tickets and further details.
