Escapee dogs rescued from Grand Union Canal

ESCAPEE dogs had to be rescued from the Grand Union Canal after getting stuck.

Six-year-old rescue dog Laker and his ‘inseparable’ friend, one-year-old Newfoundland Baloo, both escaped from their home in Leamington on Wednesday night (April 25).

Worried owners, the Hunter family, received a call from firefighters after Laker was found in the canal just after midnight on Thursday. The dog had become stuck and crews needed to use water rescue equipment to rescue the beloved pet.

The RSPCA and police were also called to the scene after being alerted to the lost dogs by the family, who immediately arrived to pick up their dog and look for Baloo – who there was no sign of.

But on Thursday morning Ashleigh Hunter was contacted by a member of the public who had spotted the huge pup in the water and managed to pull him out.

She told the Observer: “They both escaped together and must of travelled a few miles to the canal.

“Laker was first to be pulled out and Baloo must have been in the canal all night until he was found in the morning. Baloo never leaves his side so we were really concerned when he was not there too.

“They were both very tired, hungry and wet when we got them out so we have been monitoring them closely since.”

Her brother Tom added: “They are great guard dogs and so good with my sister Holly who is disabled. We’re really relieved to have them back.”
