  • Whitnash step up title bid

    30 April 2008

    Hartshill 0 Whitnash 1
HIGH-flying Whitnash stepped up their Coventry Alliance Division Four title bid with a hard fought victory at championship rivals Hartshill on Saturday.
A scrappy affair between the top two sides, on a difficult pitch, was settled by an early penalty with veteran Brian Agar adjudged to have been pushed and young playmaker Kev McGarvey duly converted the resulting spot-kick.
Hartshill rallied but were restricted to long range efforts thanks to some experienced defending by Harris, Waldon, O’Loughlin and the superb Dimitru being backed up by the safe handling of Clarke.
Whitnash weathered the storm and began to boss the last 20 minutes of the half with Agar and McGarvey a constant threat.
On the stroke of half time Guy Furnivall turned awkwardly which resulted in the midfielder tearing his knee cartilage six days before the cup final which means he joins captain Scott Burden and Joe Friend on the injury list.
Whitnash continued to hold the upperhand after the bfeak with Urquhart, Agar an Haggarty all going close with the latter also rattling the bar with a late header.
Whitnash had previously ronped to a 5-2 midweek victory over Brinklow with Daniel Dimitru 2, Kev McGarvey, Billy Haggarty and Jimmy Claridge on target.
Whitnash face Coventry Colliery in the Boyd Carpenter Cup final on Friday night at Hawkes Mill Sports ground, Allesley, Coventry.
