  • Thompson treble boosts Brakes

    30 April 2008

    Berkhamsted Town 0 Leamington 5
MARTIN THOMPSON hit a hat-trick as Brakes cruised to a convincing victory which ensured they finished the season just twomppoints behind champions Evesham United.
It took just six minutes for Brakes to take the lead when a superb cross from Jamie Towers tempted Town keeper Michael Underwood off his line and Thompson climbed highest to nod the ball into the empty net.
Towers was heavily involved two minutes later as the ball pinged around the six yard box, Thompson got in a shot that Underwood saved with his feet, but the striker tucked in the rebound to increase the lead.
Another tantalising low cross from Towers was inches away from the onrushing Robbie Beard and the returning Josh Blake.
Justin Marsden’s cross was well held by Underwood under pressure from Liam Reynolds, while Blake sent a pass through to Thompson and the home keeper saved again with his feet.
Thompson fired the rebound goalwards only to see Underwood tip the ball onto the post and the busy keeper also did well to turn a shot from Adam Cooper round the post.
The goal of the match arrived after 20 minutes when Martin Hier’s crossfield pass was collected at full flight by Towers whose cracking drive with the outside of his right foot flew into the top corner.
The advantage was extended after 74 minutes when Reynolds released Thompson who completed his hat-trick by thumping the ball into the roof of the net.
The nearest Berkhamsted came to scoring was when Ian Brumwell got behind the Brakes defence and his shot whistled into the side netting.
At the other end Marcus Jackson fired inches wide, while substitute Shay Morgan surged into the penalty area before smashing a shot against the crossbar.
The scoring was completed in the 84th minute when substitute James Husband – making his 100th appearance for the club – crossed for Morgan to glide in unnoticed at the far post and sidefoot home.
