With three and a half million visitors each year, the Port Aventura theme park and resort, just an hour’s drive from Barcelona in Salou, Catalonia, ranks as one of the most popular in Europe. This is a family friendly destination with much to offer. The resort is split into six main areas, each with different themes and features, and has 12 main rides, a wave pool and beach, and a choice of shops, restaurants and hotels.
In many ways Port Aventura is similar to Siam Park in Tenerife, a more relaxing park which itself is an excellent venue with many fantastic features on offer. If the Canary Islands are your destination, Siam Park is well worth checking out. However, the thrills and spills offered by the very impressive and highly regarded rides at Port Aventura do make it a great choice for thrill seekers.
The six themed areas offer a choice of rides and features, starting with the opening area – Mediterrania – which offers a number of restaurants and shops and two exciting rides. The Furius Baco rollercoaster is a wild ride, the fastest in Europe at 83.9mph, and is among the most popular attractions in Port Aventura. The other ride in the opening area is the Boat Ride, a leisurely trip from this area to the Chinese area. It is worth knowing that Port Aventura Tickets can be pre-booked online, a sensible choice as the resort is extremely popular.
Other areas within the park include the Far West, a wild-west town themed area that offers rides such as the Stampida, a double rollercoaster with a duelling theme and it’s junior, parallel version the Tomahawk, as well as the Silver River Flume and a white-water adventure, the Grand Canyon Rapids. Next in line is Mexico, an area that includes a number of Mexican themed rides and features, among them the mighty Hurakan Condor, one of the highest drop tower rides in the world at 330ft, and the Mayan temple inspired walk-through adventure feature Templo del Fuego.
China is the biggest of the themed areas in the park and is home to the Marco Polo Chinese buffet restaurant, a popular place for families looking for a good meal. Rides include the famous and highly regarded Dragon Khan rollercoaster which, with its eight inversions, is often ranked by fans as one of the most exciting of its kind in the world. Polynesia is the next area, and is deliberately aimed at more leisurely rides and features as opposed to the adrenaline rush thrills of the other areas. Sea Odyssey is one of the most impressive features, a cinematic experience with surround sound and motion that recreates a submarine adventure under the sea.
The remaining area is SesamoAventura, a feature aimed at younger visitors and themed around the characters from the iconic Sesame Street TV programme. Like many such complexes, Port Aventura also hosts events and parades, and seasonal fixtures offer greater variety. The fine choice of shops and restaurants, and a choice of four themed hotels, makes this a very worthy contender for an excellent family holiday resort.
