STUDENTS at Trinity School have rallied together to raise more than £1,000 for a fellow pupil who is battling cancer.
Dan O'Regan was diagnosed with Ewings Sarcoma – a rare bone cancer – back in November and is currently undergoing chemotherapy at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham.
Led by classmate and bass player Lewis Fagge, a group of current and former students held a concert and cake sale which raised £1,106.
The money has since been put towards a MacBook Pro computer for 16-year-old Dan to keep up with his studies while in hospital.
The aspiring musician, who lives in Coventry and is drummer for local band Odyssey Blue, has already undergone his first bout of chemotherapy and was set to begin his second yesterday (Wednesday).
Speaking from hospital, Dan said: “Originally when they told me about the concert I thought they might raise a few hundred pounds but when they rang to say how much they had collected, I couldn't believe it.
"Unfortunately I wasn't well enough to leave the hospital but luckily Lewis' mum works here so she rang my mum who was there and I listened to the whole thing.”
Dan's chemotherapy has forced him to miss interviews at Stratford College and BOA Academy in Birmingham but he hopes to pursue his dream of studying music technology and performance when he is fully recovered.
He added: “At the moment, I'm just focusing on getting better. The doctors are very positive and seem to think the tumour is shrinking.”
Principal Chris Gabbett said: "When I told Dan about the computer he was absolutely made up and despite all he has been through, he's a very positive young man.
"I'm really impressed by the maturity shown not only by Dan but also by the pupils at my school and I am proud to be their headteacher. We all wish Dan the best of luck and look forward to seeing him smiling round school when he is better.”
