A PAINTING of the River Leam has been acquired by Leamington Spa Art Gallery in memory of late antiques dealer David Barby.

The Friends of Leamington Spa Art Gallery & Museum (FLAG) bought the oil painting by Stephen Bone - who worked as an official War Artist during the Second World War - for the Pump Rooms gallery.

It was during this time, when based in Leamington, that Bone painted many local scenes of the town. This particular painting The River Leam, Thaw, done in 1946, focuses on a view of the Leam, and will join three other paintings by Bone showing Leamington life at the time.

FLAG decided to purchase the painting to commemorate the life of Mr Barby, who aside from being an antiques expert who appeared on many popular TV programmes including Flog It and Bargain Hunt, was also the President of FLAG.

David was a long- time supporter of Leamington Spa Art Gallery & Museum, and worked in the town for many years with auctioneers Locke and England.

He was keen on supporting the work of local artists and donated two oil paintings to the art gallery.

Senior Curatorial Officer Chloe Johnson said: "David Barby was such a keen supporter of Leamington Spa Art Gallery & Museum and it was a privilege to have known him on both a personal and professional basis".

"We are extremely grateful to FLAG for their continued support towards Leamington Spa Art Gallery & Museum.

"The Stephen Bone painting which has kindly been donated by FLAG is currently on display in the main art gallery and looks wonderful alongside other works by Bone."

Staff at the art gallery are not sure where on the Leam Bone did his painting and are keen to hear from anyone who may know.
