VICTORIA Park will play host to some of the top young bowlers in the country after being chosen to hold the 2013 British Isles Women’s Bowls Council Junior International Series and Championships on July 20/21.

The event was due to be staged in Ireland but due to unforeseen circumstances a change of venue was requested.

Tony Allcock MBE, Bowls England chief executive, said:“It is unfortunate that Ireland are unable to host the event as originally planned, particularly for many who may have already made travel plans, our own team and officials included.

However, thanks to the co-operation of Warwick District Council and Royal Leamington Spa BC we were pleased to be able to offer the facilities at Victoria Park to the BIWB, and we now look forward to welcoming players and spectators from all teams later this summer.”

Players will arrive in Leamington for practice sessions on Friday, July 19 followed by the international series throughout Saturday and Sunday morning, concluding with the British Junior Championships on Sunday afternoon.

Councillor Stephen Cross, portfolio holder for cultural services said:”Although it is unfortunate for the original host of these international championships that they can no longer hold this event, it is good news for our district.

“Now that Victoria Park is established as the venue of the English Championships and Leamington is the headquarters of Bowls England we may hopefully be playing host to more high profile competitions.

“Certainly this event in July, will provide a further boost to our visitor numbers and the economic benefit that they will bring.”
