HIGHLIGHTING the issue of skin lightening in the Asian community has seen a budding TV presenter from Leamington win a top national award.

Monika Plaha beat eight other finalists, and 300 entrants overall, in this year’s 'Breaking Into News' contest, a national initiative for 18 to 25-year-olds run in partnership by ITV News and Media Trust.

The 20-year-old compiled a report on the issue of skin lightening in the Asian community, mentored by ITV Centre presenter Victoria Davies.

She said: "My report looked at the issue and why some people want to use chemicals to change the colour of their skin, why they feel pressured to do it.

"If illegal skin whitening products are used it can be very dangerous. The whole concept does sadden me."

As overall winner she will be presented with an iPad to help with future projects and be given the opportunity to spend the day with the team producing ITV News at Ten.

Monika, a former North Leamington School and Myton School student, added: “Winning is a dream come true.

“I can’t wait to spend a day with the team at ITV News at Ten and learn even more about broadcast journalism.”

Monika, in her final year of university in Leicester, added she was now hoping for a future career in broadcast journalism.

Robin Elias, managing editor of ITV News, said: “The judges were unanimous in their praise for Monika. Her final news report is extremely well put together and shows real creativity and skill.“
