JAMES Gilchrist, one of Britain’s leading tenors, sings Schubert at Warwick's St Mary’s Church on February 19.

Winterreise - Winter's Journey - is widely regarded as one of the greatest song cycles ever written. Schubert wrote the seventy minute cycle in 1827, the year before he died.

Gilchrist, who through local connections has sung regularly in Warwick and Leamington over the past decade, actually began life as a doctor.

But his tenor voice and musicality took him into professional singing during the mid 1990s. He has performed in opera, oratorios, orchestral works and solo recitals all over Europe and in Russia, Japan and the USA.

Richard Phillips, Festival Director of concert promoters Leamington Music, said: “We are delighted that James has found time in his busy international schedule to return here to sing Winterreise. He gave a stunning performance in St Mary’s in winter 2007 and since then his recording with pianist Anna Tilbrook has had the critics reaching for superlatives. It was chosen as the BBC Music Magazine Recording of the Month when it first appeared.

“This time he will be accompanied not on a modern, grand piano but an instrument more like the keyboard instruments that would have been around in the 1820’s. The effect is to emphasise the drama of Schubert’s wonderful music.”

The concert on February 19 is part of the monthly series of early music concerts promoted by Leamington Music at St Mary’s Church. The season will end on March 19 when violinist Lucy Russell, another regular visitor, directs The Dartington Connection in a programme of baroque music by Purcell, Bach, Handel, Vivaldi, Janitsch and Telemann.

Tickets for all Leamington Music concerts are available from the Bridge House Theatre box office, by visiting www.bridgehousetheatre.co.uk or calling 01926 776438. They can also be bought in person from St Mary’s Church Gift Shop and Warwick Tourist Information Centre.
