Help shape the future of Kenilworth

KENILWORTH residents have been urged to help shape the town's future over the next 15 years.

A public consultation, running until February 18, aims to gauge what locals want to see for the town.

It is being led by Kenilworth Town Council which hopes to draw up a plan for shaping future projects.

Among proposals mooted, in Abbey Fields there is talk of re-locating the play area to the redundant bowling green and then using the current play area land as a picnic area plus space for bands and other performing arts. Improvements to the swimming pool, tennis courts and car park are also suggested.

Other proposals include extending Castle Farm Sports Complex to incorporate local cricket and rugby clubs plus BMX facilities and a possible athletics track.

At Kenilworth Castle there is talk of improving pedestrian access between the castle and the town centre, as well as long-talked about proposals to re-introduce the ancient mere around the castle.

At the Civic Centre in Smalley Place there is scope to possibly house the Talisman Theatre - if the company chose to move - plus screen films and offer medical drop-in services.

Tackling the lack of parking in the town centre and finally getting a train station re-established are also mentioned.

Liberal Democrats in Kenilworth have urged local residents to be cautious how they answer the questionnaire.

Richard Dickson, local party chair, said: "We are all for more involvement of local residents in decision-making, but we have reservations about this questionnaire-based approach.

"We agree with some of these ideas, but are strongly opposed to others. It is frequently hard to correlate the questionnaire with the accompanying 'draft' document, and thus to express a clear response to the ideas put forward.

"The consultation runs until the February 18, so there is plenty of time to think carefully before responding."
