Warwick community group seeks support

TIME and ideas are required by a Warwick community centre as it pushes to become a self-sustaining success story.

The centre in Coten End – once feared to be under threat of closure due to council cutbacks – has been re-launched as 'WarwickSpace', a non-profit making social enterprise run by local residents and governors from Coten End Primary School.

A diverse range of groups use the building, including a pre-school, Tai Chi class and clubs serving disabled people, but there is still scope for many more to get involved.

An open evening at the centre from 7pm on Thursday (January 17) will provide an opportunity for local people to find out more, share their views or volunteer to help out.

Roger Beckett, chair of WarwickSpace, said the centre currently remained a “hidden gem”, adding: “We offer good old fashioned face-to-face contact and a sense of belonging.

“By harnessing the energy of our volunteers, and backing their ideas, we can quickly and cost effectively build income and turn WarwickSpace into a self sustaining place that is independent of government funding and not vulnerable to spending cuts.

“We ask for no big commitments or time on cumbersome committees but a range of opportunities to suit volunteers determined by the skills and time they can offer."
