PUPILS at a primary school in Leamington are celebrating coming top of the class.
Key Stage 2 exam result league tables published by the Department of Education recently show 100 per cent of year six pupils at St Peter's Catholic Primary School achieved the expected national average of Level 4 in the key subjects of English, Maths and Science.
The exams are taken in the final year of primary school and are used as a yardstick to see how pupils have improved from their Key Stage 1 exams, taken at the age of seven.
It was this level of overall improvement combined with the school achieving the national average which sent the Augusta Place school flying to the top of the tables in Warwickshire.
From the 14 pupils who sat the exams, there was even a pupil who arrived at the school speaking only French but just eight months later, went on to secure the national average for her age group in English.
And to mark the school's special achievement headteacher Maria Murphy received a letter from the Minister of State for Schools, Rt Hon David Laws MP, congratulating the school on its performance.
Mrs Murphy told the Observer: “This has been another successful year and these results reflect the hard work of the children who are determined to do their best.
“They also emphasise the dedication of all the staff combined with wonderful support from the parents and everyone deserves to be congratulated.
“We are really pleased to be the top school in Warwickshire and among the top four per cent in the country and we are very proud of our children and all their achievements.”
