THE DRIVER of a 4x4 vehicle was seriously injured after being trapped under his vehicle when it overturned on the M40.

The Land Rover was involved in a smash with a car on the M40 Southbound, just south of Junction 12 at Gaydon, around 12.10pm on Thursday (September 27).

Two ambulances and the Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance attended the scene.

Paramedic Area Manager, Martyn Scott, said: “Ambulance crews arrived on scene to find a 4x4 vehicle that had overturned which was towing a trailer with agricultural equipment.

“The man driving the 4x4, believed to be in his 60s, was partially ejected from the vehicle and his leg became trapped under the vehicle that was on its side.

“He received emergency treatment at the scene by ambulance crews, including pain relief, and his condition was stabilised.

"The vehicle was then lifted by the fire service using air bags and he was safely removed. The man was trapped for around one hour and received further treatment for his serious leg injury and a pelvic injury once he was released.

“The patient was airlifted to University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire for further emergency treatment.

A man and a woman travelling in the second car were both treated at the scene for multiple minor injuries.

The couple, believed to be in their 60s, were transferred by land ambulance to Horton General Hospital at Banbury for further treatment.

The woman had suffered chest injuries and due to her injuries the roof of the car was removed so she could be taken out as safely as possible.

The motorway was closed for around an hour and a half, during which an 11 mile queue built up back to Junction 14.

Warwickshire Police are investigating the cause of the crash.
