POLICE are probing a failed attempt to rob from a transit van in Cubbington on Monday afternoon (October 1).
At about 4.45pm a cash security guard was returning to his van in Rugby Road, after making a collection, when a man ran up to him and tried to grab the smoke box he was carrying which containing cash.
The attempt failed and the would-be thief got into the front passenger seat of a VW golf parked nearby. The car drove off from the Tavern pub car park onto the Rugby Road and towards Cubbington turning right towards Offchurch at the traffic island.
If opened, the smoke box would have released a red dye rendering any cash in the box immediately identifiable as stolen and worthless to the thieves.
A car believed to be the silver VW used in the failed robbery was later found burnt out half a mile away in Stonehouse Close, Cubbington.
The would-be thief is described as a tall white stocky male who was wearing a grey hoody. The driver is also described as a white male whose face was covered with a hood or scarf.
Officers are asking the public for any sightings of two males in the Stonehouse Close area at around 5pm on Monday when it’s believed the vehicle was abandoned. They may have left the area on foot, possibly across fields or got into another vehicle.
Due to the time the fire was reported – at 8pm on Monday evening - the men or an accomplice may have returned to the vehicle sometime between 5pm and 8pm to set it alight.
