SOUTHAM cruised to victory in their first competitive outing of the season on Saturday despite not making the fastest of starts.

Ledbury were the quicker out of the blocks and kicked two penalties to open up a 6-0 lead but once the hosts got into their stride they proved unstoppable.

Strong tackling from centre Mudd saw Ledbury concede possession to wing forward Ackford who raced 40m to score a try which Maguire converted.

Bench quickly added another converted try and Southam went straight on the attack again from the restart when Catterall broke through several tackles before starting a move that ended with Mudd going over. Maguire’s conversion completed the scoring for the half and gave Southam a 21-6 interval lead.

Two Maguire penalties got the second half scoring underway before he added the conversion to Bench’s try after he had been fed by Lyne.

Good defensive work from Ashby halted a rare Ledbury attack and Southam were soon back on the attack with Ackford releasing Mudd to score a converted try before replacement centre Tsang crossed for the final points of the game.
