Fine effort down by the seaside

BARBARA Mumford, of Welford Bowling Club, enjoyed a fine run in the ladies’ pairs at the Weston-super-Mare Ladies’ Open Bowls Tournament - sponsored by Optika - last week.

The Bidford resident, who was partnered by Maureen Edwards (Thornfield Bowling Club, Rugby), beat title favourites Pauline Gunn and Kay Gent (Caer Glow, Gloucester) 20-12 on their way to the semi-final.

At that stage, they came up against Clevedon Promenade’s former England player Margaret Dyer and her partner Sarah Lowman (Winscombe).

Mumford and Edwards led 13-10 after 14 ends, but then dropped a six and a four. They fought back valiantly, only to lose by one shot, 21-20.

Another Warwickshire lady bowler, Pat Bax (Warwick BC), who had entered the tournament for the first time, reached the final of the Unified Singles, a competition for both sexes, which is played over two sets of nine ends.

Her opponent was Weston-super-Mare local Barrie Forse, a former Gloucestershire and Somerset Middleton Cup player.

He took the first set 10-3 and, though Bax picked up a three on the final end of the second set to draw it 8-8, she was edged out on points 3-2, picking up a £75 prize as a consolation.
