COMMUTING cyclists are being warned to be on their guard following a spate of bike thefts from Leamington's railway station.

Since July 9 four cyclists have had their bike stolen from the railway station and officers have stepped up patrols at the station as a result.

Now British Transport Police (BTP), who regularly hold cycle workshops providing advice to people who cycle to and from stations, are reminding cyclists to take simple security steps to ensure their bike is not an easy target for thieves.

Police Community Support Officer Hayley Jones, of BTP Coventry, advised cyclists to secure the frame and wheels of their bikes with two good quality locks.

She recommended cyclists leave their bike in a busy, well-lit, CCTV-covered area ensuring it is marked or fitted with an electronic tracing system to help locate it in the event of a theft.

And PCSO Jones also warned cyclists to insure their bike or keep a photograph and note the frame number and any markings, which could help police to identify stolen bikes that are recovered.

She said: “If you see anyone acting suspiciously around cycle racks at railway stations contact the British Transport Police immediately.”

If you have any information about the recent thefts at Leamington Spa call British Transport Police on 0800 40 50 40 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 quoting reference number B2/WWA of 08/08/2012.
