YOUNG Warwick swimmers set to tackle the English Channel have been paid a visit by Olympic gold medallist Sharron Davies.
The swimming star met students from Warwick School and King’s High School last weekend ahead of their attempts.
The Warwick School swimming squad - six boys aged between 14 and 18 - will attempt a two-way crossing, the first boys' school in 30 years to take on the challenge.
The King’s High School team of six girls will be the first all girls’ school relay to make their ‘classic’ attempt from Shakespeare Beach, Dover, to Cap Gris Nez near Calais.
During the crossings pupils have to cope with low water temperatures and inevitably encounter jellyfish, seaweed and debris, not to mention avoid large ferries and tankers as they swim through the packed shipping lanes.
Sharron spoke to the swimmers about their challenge and said that as someone who doesn’t like swimming in cold water she admired their stamina and determination.
As the main sponsor of the Warwick School Channel Swim, Rybrook BMW arranged the event with Sharron Davies at their showroom in Warwick.
