LEAMINGTON hot-shot Naomi Folkard has been officially named in the Great Britain archery team for the Olympic Games.
Folkard’s selection for her third Olympic Games was confirmed yesterday (Wednesday) and she will line-up alongside Alison Williamson and Amy Oliver for the competition at Lord’s between July 27 and August 3.
The same three won the team silver medal at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi, 2010 and will be aiming to go one better on home ground.
A delighted Folkard said: “I am so excited, and proud, to qualify for the Olympic Games for a third time.
ut to take part in a home Olympics will be very special. Securing my place makes all those long hours of practice, hard work week in week out, and sacrifice worthwhile - getting to the London Olympics has been my incentive, and every day I’ve been working towards that.”
“Having said that, qualifying is only the start of it. Now I’ve got to make sure I’m at the top of my game come July 27.
“There will be 63 other archers in the women’s tournament who will be as ambitious for a medal as I am, and the competition will be fierce, as you’d expect.”
“Walking out at Lords, in front of a packed crowd, will be just an amazing experience - it was fantastic at the Test event last year when we performed virtually behind closed doors, but with 5,000 people cheering you on when you walk out will be something else, and I am very privileged.
“Obviously, I would like to pay tribute to everyone who has helped me over the years - from my family to my coaches, and the support staff at Archery GB who have helped me achieve what I have in the sport.”
Folkard also believes there is every chance of picking up a medal.
She added: “ ndividually we’re all capable of competing with the very best, and as a team - well, the three of us won a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games, so why not an Olympic medal.”
“This is a fantastic opportunity to showcase archery. I’m biased, but it’s a wonderful sport, and I love it just as much now as I did when I first started shooting as a young girl.
“ I hope watching the archery at the Olympics will encourage people to give the sport a go.”
