THE deputy head of a Leamington school has been honoured by the Winston Churchill Trust.

Chris Gabbett, who works at Trinity School, received a fellowship medallion at Westminster from Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson, one of only 12 in the field of education to get the award.

Competition is fierce, with only about ten per cent of applications ever proceeding to an interview. The trust sponsors international travel to research best practices.

Mr Gabbett travelled to Australia and Norway to research teaching and learning approaches that best support learners from poorer backgrounds and has since delivered lectures at a number of national conferences as well as being invited to join a think tank on the learning of children in care.

He said: “The Winston Churchill Memorial Trust has provided me with a real honour. I would recommend any teacher who has a travel bug to apply for this.”

Mr Gabbett, who moveD to England after graduating from the University of Queensland, Australia, was recently appointed principal at Trinity and will take up the role in September.

Visit www.wcmt.org.uk for more information on the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust or see www.lavalla.wordpress.com for Mr Gabett's blog.
